Emotional Infidelity

emotional-infidelilty-image

The conventional definition of cheating, or infidelity, is that one person in a committed relationship is physically involved with someone other than their partner or spouse. Due to numerous factors, cheating behavior has been redefined to include the conventional definition and a more contemporary definition, known as emotional infidelity.

Emotional Infidelity

Emotional infidelity is defined as any infidelity that occurs that involves feeling or thought. In an interview with Playboy magazine, former President Jimmy Carter stated that from time to time he “lusted in (his) heart” for women other than his wife. His thoughts were linked and equated with infidelity, and he was considered by many people to be unfaithful to his marriage, even though his statement described emotional infidelity, not physical infidelity.

With the technological development of cell phones and the internet, the definition of cheating has been extended to also include the traditional definition, PLUS the feelings and/or thoughts that comprise emotional infidelity. Cheating now includes having intimate communications with someone while on a cell phone, meeting someone on the Internet and developing a relationship, or looking at pornographic material through any available source.

Quote: Love is the beauty of the soul
- 11.26.2008 - Article Number: 31

"Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are.

Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.
- Captain Corelli's Mandolin. "Love is the beauty of the soul." --St. Augustine

How can you be sure you are experiencing love?
- 11.12.2008 - Article Number: 30

How can you be sure you are experiencing love?

How do you know when you are being loved?

We would all like to be loved more and feel full of love But I have a question for you. “How do you know for sure THAT you are experiencing love?” in other words
“How do you experience love, and how do you KNOW you are experiencing it?”
Funny question isn’t it. Do you feel love when you’re biting into your favorite chocolate or candy? Of course not! Well maybe sometimes? If you’re sharing it with that loving special person! So how do you know that you have been truly loved by somebody.

Wouldn’t it be lovely if you had a little lamp on the end of your nose that lit up every time you experienced love so that you and others would know it? No, it’s not quite that simple. Are you experiencing love when you receive a phone call from your favorite friend or a distant loved one? What about when you get up out of bed, and it’s a holiday, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. You’re full of energy, you feel great – is that love?

Do you for instance experience love when a friend gives you an unexpected gift? Are good feelings equivalent to love? What do you think? Does it follow then that if someone can make you feel good, that you’re being loved? If that’s so then there are some people that you and I could never love, because they live deep in the valley of depression and misery despite their comfortable circumstances. Does that also mean that it is easier to love a person who is in a good mood than someone who is angry? Are you feeling loved when you get what you’ve wanted for a long time? It may be a new gadget, a new relationship, a promotion, perhaps some extra income. Do you really feel unloved until you get the item?

If you’re expecting a definitive clear answer to these questions from me, you’ll be disappointed.
How we experience love is a very complex and personal matter. Built upon our associations of experiencing love through a variety of activities in our past. We may experience love found in a special touch, an encouraging word, a special gift, some quality time or even from an act of service. So what makes you feel loved? Really loved?

Take some time during the next 48 hours to notice when you know you are loved or feel loved, and what happened to make it so. I guarantee that if you do that for the next 48 hours, you will see loving in a new light. Every time you notice that you are experiencing love, thank God for it, it is a gift from God to experience and to share real love.

We all are seeking love, and yet most of us do not even know when we are getting it or not. How can we expect to find love if we cannot even recognize it?

“Find love in your life, and never ever, ever let go of it.”
